Chapter Twenty One:

The Forest of Curses

It was dawning. Unfortunately for us, the fog was blown away too early, and together with it our opportunity for a better cover, as well. We hoped that the thick vegetation and the little light reaching under the forest would be enough for us to be able to thoroughly explore the forest near the gates of the estate without the need to waste our strength fighting in vain. Because the night of the full moon was awaiting us. The night of complete madness and hope for salvation was only a few hours away and we had to be ready…

There was no sun that day. Its beautiful shining rays remained hidden. The sky was gray as though hanging over the forest, ready to help us in our mission. The air was heavy, or at least in my lungs every breath felt heavy, knowing that because of my human beloved I could lose people close to my heart. But I had no choice, I had to save Jane, because without her there was no life for me, no day, no night, no damn existence!

“Come on, it's time, I elbowed Natalie lightly, because she was deeply asleep, leaning on a thick log.

She jumped up, instantly ready for battle. She expected bloodshed even in her sleep, like we all did. My hopes were quite different, but there was very little chance that they would come true.

“Natalie, Lauren and I will explore the paths through the forest that will lead us to the mansion. You must stand here and watch this area because this is our only escape route once we get Jane and the other prisoners out. Our enemies should not find our location whatever the cost! If they cut us off from this rout we are dead,” I tried to sound as serious as possible, because the evening ahead required a full mobilization of strength and consciousness. There was no room for even the smallest mistakes. They could cost someone's life.

“Lauren,” I nodded to him. “You are coming with me and Natalie. And you, Chris...,” I looked at him. “You stay here with Brian and Gabriel, as well as the others, to guard the place. If we're not back by nightfall, run to our part of the forest before the full moon shines and don't look back!”

“But…” Chris was about to protest and got up from the rock on which he had stretched himself.

“Don’t argue with me!” I interrupted him. It’s an order. You must obey!”

“Yes, Boss,” I felt anxiety in his voice and caught Brian's rebellious look in the distance. They were brave men who didn't like being ordered at all, but in the pack the alpha's words were law that could not be challenged. If I had to use those rights of mine to keep them alive I would do it and pay the price.

“We have to go. By now, the masters should have already woken up and their spies are off to their patrol routes. Come on, Dean.
